It is mainly famous for it's beautiful sunsets. Varkala is very easy to travel with young children. The people are very friendly and open.

Kerala
Kerala is known for its beautiful beaches and extensive backwaters, and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in India, both for Indians as well as foreigners.

Its is also known as 'God's own country''
Kerala is also well known for its ayurvedic heritage. Ayurveda is named for the Sanskrit word Ayurveda, meaning the "science of life."

According to Ayurvedic theory, everything in the universe -- living or not -- is connected. Good health is achieved when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. A disruption of this harmony can lead to poor health and sickness.

If would like to learn more on ayurveda, you will find it here.

There are a variety of courses you may take such as Aurvedic massage or Ayurvedic medicine as well as yoga teachers trainings in Varkala or anywhere in Kerala.

Surf spots

Varkala

Varkala is not far to the north from Kovalam Beach. The spot is a beach break but when it is working it gets exceptionally hollow right and left handers. The ride isn’t that long but its fast!
The best wind direction is from the east northeast. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the best swell direction is from the southwest. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. Even when the surf is up, crowds are unknown.Mixed beach break peaks of varying quality, suitable for beginners.

Hawa's Beach

Kovalam has usually heading to the swell protected northern beach that is mostly flat. Hawa Beach faces directly into the SW swell and wind, making for messy lefts forming off the scattered rocks at the southern end. Life guards patrol and it’s one of the few topless bathing beaches in India, drawing weekend voyeurs and plenty of middle-aged tourists. Those expecting a replica of Goa will be disappointed. Kovalam has cheap hotels and laid-back places to hang out and there’s even a couple of local surfers.

India_Kovalam_Lighthouse_Beach_Kerala-Surf_Spot_2x3-2a
Lighthouse Beach - Kerala

Lighthouse Beach has staked a claim as the country's premier surfing destination since Kerala Tourism commissioned ASR to build a multi-purpose, artificial surf reef. Upon completion in early 2010, video footage of the new ‘Kovalam reef’ showed an organised, peeling lip line and a top to bottom power not usually associated with this coastline. Since the onset of the monsoon however, reports suggest that geo-textile bags have moved and the ‘reef’ at the southern end isn’t working as perfectly. Lighthouse is highly consistent and there are other peaks at the north end and centre of the beach. Best time is from November when the NE winds start until late season May, when the wave closes-out a lot and the wind swings SW-NW. Erosion is also a big factor and this beach and the reef will hopefully help with accretion.

Local surf numbers are growing thanks to Kovallam Surf Club and NGO S.I.S.P. who reward poverty stricken kids with free surf instruction/equipment if they attend school classes. Boards are available to rent and a positive local scene is emerging thanks to dedicated hard work from Europeans like Jelle Rigole. Travellers can help by donating any equipment to keep these kids in the water.

Getting here

There are many airlines flying to the nearest airport Trivandrum. Emirates flies here on a daily base and offers very comfortable flights, especially when travelling with children. From Trivandrum you may take a taxi which will drive you straight to Varkala. From Trivandrum airport it’s a 1 hour drive. Another option is to fly to Cochin International airport (COK) which is about 5 hours north of Soul & Surf. If you fly to Cochin you can easily get a taxi from the airport. If you are on a more adventurous journey you may also fly to any big city in India and take the train or a domestic flight from there to Trivandrum instead. Note: most train rides from the cities are very long ones, some even days. When travelling in India theres one thing to always remember; never be in a rush.
